Who's Using Fishman: Artist of the Month
James Ruff
June 2009
As a songwriter, James Ruff admits he was influenced by many of the best performers of his generation, especially Cat Stevens, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson. He adds, “My music expands across many ages and genres, and all ages can enjoy the feel and content.”
Ruff grew up in Washington State, Colorado and Later in life the Northeast. Eventually, he found himself drawn to music in an effort to break through some challenging conditions in his life. “The guitar came into my life as a type of life vest,” he confided. “My life was tough, and the guitar seemed to be the only healthy distraction I could find. Guitar gave me back my life.”
Ruff has demonstrated an ability to sing and perform all forms of music, from rock and pop to folk and acoustic. In recent years, he has found his niche in what he calls “Americana-world music”, referring to a blend of simple music that comes from Africa and Latin America.
In 2008, he traveled to Ghana, in western Africa, to study up to five hours a day with master drummer Mustapha Tettey Addy, who is recognized on the world circuit as one of Africa’s top drummers and Nii Qua. “I did so because I believe rhythm is the heart and soul of life,” he said. “Music without rhythm is lifeless.”
During his time in Africa, Ruff learned to play djembe and a type of congo drum from Ghana called the kpanlogo. Now he incorporates it into his music, in addition to playing guitar, piano and singing his own compositions.
