Ewan Hastie

Now only 21 years old, left handed double bassist Ewan Hastie won BBC Young Jazz Musician 2022, being the first Scottish musician to win the award. He also recently received the Mark McKergow Prize for Jazz Improvisation twice in 2022 and again in 2023.

He studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s jazz programme with, among others, a familiar figure on the Scottish jazz scene, bassist Mario Caribe. Starting with two years at the RCS Juniors and completing his full time studies as a Bachelor of Music degree finally being awarded an Honours First Class BA Music in Jazz.

Born in Edinburgh, and raised in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Ewan started playing with the Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra and with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland, he gained touring experience, visiting Skye, Glasgow, Belfast, and Sligo Jazz Festival. Also during his studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Ewan was selected to go to Nuremberg, Germany, which he and some other RCS students participated in a European Jazz Workshop.

Ewan has had the pleasure of playing with Tommy Smith, Iain Ballamy, Ryan Quigley, Paul Towndrow, Fergus McCreadie, Pete Johnstone, Brian Kellock, Niki Yeoh, Huw Warren, Alyn Cosker, Tom Gordon, Sabastian de Krom, Mark Mondesir only to name a few. Ewan has also had the opportunity to tour throughout the UK and across Europe.
